Whale Watching – The Biggest Show on Earth

From December to March-ish, majestic humpback whales make their annual sojourn to Maui’s warm coastal waters to start their families. If you’re lucky, you might spot newborn calves putting on impressive aerial displays alongside their moms. You can watch the spectacle from Kāʻanapali Beach or book a charter boat from Maalaea to get closer to these marine showstoppers.

Fly Across Tropical Slopes

As Maui’s only dual zipline, Kapalua Ziplines is a shared adventure taking you by ancient volcanoes and panoramic views across thousands of feet of zipline. Their most popular tours include ATV rides and a walk across Hawaiʻi’s largest suspension bridge for a breathtaking way to experience Maui.

Go Off-Roading

Maui’s rugged terrain and winding trails make for epic ATV adventures. Explore Lahaina and its surrounding areas going through riverbed crossings, jungle canopies, and bamboo forests, many accessible only by ATV. The guided tours by Maui Off-Road Adventures are perfect for couples and families with opportunities to spot local wildlife and vegetation.

Coast Through Paradise

Cyclists plus Maui are meant to be. Self-guided bike tours from Maui Sunriders in Kapalua take you from mountain to sea with options to rent road, mountain, or e-bikes. The most popular route is an exhilarating 23-mile downhill ride from Haleakalā’s 6,500-foot summit with plenty of time for picture taking along the way. Other routes take you through ʻĪao Valley, Nakalele Blowhole, and the West Maui Loop.

Explore a Sacred Volcano

Haleakalā National Park is a sacred reserve that’s home to important native ecosystems. Its centerpiece is Haleakalā (“House of the Sun,”) a majestic dormant volcano that towers into the skies, providing incredible crater views and ocean vistas. Cyclists can cruise from summit to sea and visitors flock here to catch sunrises and sunsets away from light pollution. Pro tips: Sunrise reservations are limited so be sure to nab them for entries between 3 to 7 a.m. and dress warmly if you go for stargazing.

The Road to Hāna

This scenic 64-mile drive winds from Kahului to Hāna in East Maui, with can’t miss sights and experiences along the way. Arboretums, hiking trails, waterfalls, tropical plantations, and beaches are just some of the highlights that dot the route, making it an all-day affair. Our favorite mile markers include the nearly 1,000-year-old Hāna Lava Tubes, the black sand beaches of Waiʻānapanapa State Park, and the spring-fed Hanawi Falls off Mile Marker #24.

Consider booking a guided tour to minimize the cars coming through the local Hāna community.

Upcountry Hiking Trails

Lace up those boots and beat the heat with cooler climates in upcountry Maui’s shaded forest reserves and trails. Hike or bike the Makawao Forest Reserve, which features seven different trails and fragrant wild ginger, eucalyptus and pine. Waihou Spring Trail is popular with families for an easy trail loop through the rainforest or take it up a notch to visit the Polipoli Spring State Recreation Area to walk under coastal redwoods, tropical ash and cypress trees.

The World’s Best Golf Courses

Hawaiʻi’s fairways are world renowned and have hosted countless major professional tournaments. Where else can you tee off by ancient lava flows, palm groves, and ocean views?
